    Selection Criteria

    • Physiotherapy clinical experience relevant to the Public Hospital  acute care setting with an interest in, and enthusiasm for, working with children.
    • Clinical knowledge in cardiothoracic and orthopaedic physiotherapy applicable to Paediatric and Adult settings.
    • Demonstrable high level communication,  time management and clinical prioritisation skills with an understanding of  multidisciplinary team settings as well as the ability to work independently as required.
    • Availability to work evening and weekend shifts,  be rostered for overnight on-calls, and willingness to fulfil a Rural secondment
    • A strong commitment to ongoing professional development and active involvement in quality improvement.

    FYG Clinical Rotations

    SCH Randwick First Year Graduate Positions

    Suitable for a new graduate physiotherapist with a keen interest in family centred care and in developing paediatric physiotherapy skills over a 12 month period, in a specialist tertiary hospital network. Previous undergraduate paediatric experience, in addition to entry level public hospital Cardiopulmonary and Orthopaedic undergraduate student placement experience, is preferred, but not essential.

     

    The clinical caseload at SCH will predominantly consist of  paediatric inpatients with respiratory, orthopaedic and neurological conditions, with an opportunity to gain experience in the Children's Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Orthopaedic outpatient clinics and community outpatients with general paediatric conditions.

    First Year Graduates also participate in other workplace duties such as ongoing education, a mentored Clinical Supervision program, Health Promotion, Parent/ school student education programs and quality improvement activities.

    Working Hours

    Work Rosters

    Each rotation is approximately 4 months in length. (The three current rotations are Respiratory, Orthopaedics and Secondment to OHS) First year graduates will be expected to work a variety of shifts on a rostered basis across all seven days of the week. During the respiratory rotation there are two afternoon shifts 1.30 pm - 10pm, (currently Thursday and Friday)  weekends, public holidays and on call shifts.

     

    Hours of work

    38 hours per week. One Accrued Day Off (ADO) each 4 week period worked. Day shifts are 8am -16.30pm, late shifts are 1.30pm -10pm and oncalls are 10 pm until 8 am the following day.

    Saturday and Sunday shifts are 8am -16.30 pm. FYG's are generally rostered for approximately 8 Sundays per year, in 2 x 1 month blocks)

    Evening rosters are during the respiratory rotation (1 x 4 months of the year) and are currently Thursday and Friday evening (1.30pm -10pm and on call), during this rotation the FYG is generally not rostered for weekends.

    Travel

    Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick is part of the Randwick Hospitals Campus, adjacent to the adult Prince of Wales Hospital, the Royal Hospital for Women and the Prince of Wales Private Hospital, located in close proximity to the University of New South Wales.

    The Light rail runs directly from central to Randwick and the last stop is at the Hospital. Buses are frequent and there is street parking available in the area for those who drive.

    The Physiotherapy Department

The physiotherapy department has an evidence-based approach focusing on quality improvement, safety, effectiveness, efficiency, consumer participation and fair access.

    Physiotherapists at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick assess and treat children with physical problems and disabilities, such as:

    ·         Orthopaedic problems including scoliosis, talipes equinovarus/clubfoot, sports injuries, fractures and juvenile arthritis

    ·         Neurological problems including cerebral palsy, developmental delay, brain injury, spinal cord injury and spina bifida

    ·         Respiratory problems including cystic fibrosis.

    ·         Other problems including hand injuries, muscle disease and burns

    ·         Hydrotherapy for children on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

    Education Programs

    There is a strong culture of professional development, learning and reflective practice at SCH.

    Some of the training and support programs available to First Year Graduates include individual and group clinical supervision, fortnightly in-service program, student tutorials, journal club, Orientation to Paediatrics Workshop, Hospital-wide Grand Rounds and Telehealth

    Pre-Requisites e.g. D/L; Interest in clinical areas relevant to facility

Previous undergraduate paediatric experience is preferred but not essential.
